The Hungarian love of freedom and independence often hardens into rugged and proud
individualism, which rejects guidance or discipline, military or political.
Only leaders with great personal appeal were able to unite Hungarians for any
considerable length of time. When formal rejection of an authoritarian rule is not possible
– though given half a chance they would rise against it – our resistance finds verbal
expression in the form of political satirical humor – probably a Hungarian invention.
Compared to Americans, the Hungarian culture requires only slightly higher power-
distance. Scores are almost the same. It is important to remember that Hungary, the
Czech Republic and Poland have a lot less respect for position than the Eastern-Orthodox
countries of CEE.
