It is good to leave the busy city for a change on week-ends, when the weather is nice.
You will find plenty of attractions and natural treasures outside Budapest.
DAY-TRIPS
Outside Budapest
Lake Balaton - The Hungarian
See

Absolutely beautiful resort area
all year round. From Budapest,
You can reach the lake in 60
minutes on highway M7. Swim
in the lake in the Summer, fish,
taste wine in the wine cellars,
eat in the numerous
restaurants, or take your
sailing permit, and rent a B-25
for 6 people in Balatonfüred,
Balatonkenese or Alsóörs.

The Balaton is often called the
Hungarian Sea. No doubt it is
the biggest lake in Central-
and Western Europe.

The length of the lake is 77 km,
it's widest part is 16,7 km, the
coastline is about 195 km all
together. The Balaton's surface
is 600 km2, the average depth
is 3m (the deepest part beeing
12m) and it contains about 1,8
billion m3 of water!

The lake was born about
20,000 years ago. It was
already populated in the
Roman period and it still is
"well used" since then.

Most people visit the Balaton
during the summer, but it's
also worth to take a tour in the
wintertime. It has lots of nice
cultural sites (Like the abbey of
Tihany), wineries, hiking
possibilities and even thermal
waters in it's close
neighbourhood.

The south sore of Lake
Balaton is mostly flat, you have
to walk in to get to deep water
but then it's ideal with kids. The
northern shore is mostly hilly
and the water also gets deep
faster.
Balaton Tourist Information
In the Summer most people just
hang around, take a sunbath and
dip into the
lake Balaton.

Other activities: windsurfing,
paddle-boating (biking in water),
sailing. Motor boats are forbidden.
The sorroundings of the Lake,
mostly on the northern shore
(Balaton-felvidék, "
Balaton
uplands
") offer lots of great
opportunities for hiking. The
Kali-Medence (Kali basin) for
instance is one of the nicest
areas to do that, with small
villages like
Taliándörögd,
Vigántpetend and Kapolcs.
These villages host an
Art and
Music Festival
every summer
around July, called the
"Művészetek Völgye" (
Valley of
Arts).
Kehidakustany

environment. One of the purposes of the Zoo to show the
animals of Hungary.

architecture, shows all the Hungarian domesticated
animal species. You can ride, milk a goat or a cow, feed

Visegrad
One of the most spectacular and scenic parts of our country
is the
Danube Bend, to the north of Budapest. In fact, it is
the most beautiful stretch of the river's 3000 km course
from the Black Forest in Germany, to the Black Sea in
Romania.  Many Budapest dwellers regularly visit this
wonderful area on weekends.

The three small towns of the Danube bend, Esztergom,
Visgrád and Szentendre, are like pearls on a string. Each
worth at least a half day visit. You can easily access them
from Budapest by car, train and even by boat.

Tips:
  • a boat trip on the Danube
  • sightseeing in Visegrad where you can try the
summer bobsleigh, and you can walk through a
    castle from the middle ages
  • walk around in Esztergom, and visit the Basilica
  • old train ride by the Danube
  • spend a day in Szentendre and check out the small
shops, full of antique and art.

Budapest, Hungary
Culture & Relocation Resources
The Kőröshegy bridge, which is said to be Central
Europe's largest viaduct, offers such a beautiful
panorama that motorists keep stopping on it to look
around and take photos, despite the fact that it is
dangerous and a strict no-no. The 14.7-kilometer-long
section of the M7 motorway between Zamárdi and
Balatonszárszó opened in August, 2007.

Base jumpers have also discovered and tested the
bridge as a consequence.

The Őrség region  is located in the Western
Transdanubia region,  the most western corner of
Hungary by the Austrian Border. It is the only region in
Hungary where inhabitants have continuously been
living at the same place.

It  is characterized by the variety of natural beauties,
the unchanged folk traditions, customs and traditional
crafts.

Visitors are awaited with unchanged folk traditions
and crafts (a special art of weaving, pottery, pumpkin-
seed squeezing), products from self-sufficient
peasant farms (pumpkin-seed-oil, honey brandy,
goats and cows cheese).

The preservation of the natural, culture-historical and
ethnographical values of this wonderful region is a
mission of the
Őrség National Park. The number of
protected species of plants is above 100. The flowery
hay-fields and watery fields, the hay-field orchards,
extended forests, a lot of butterfly species and the big
game provide an excellent opportunity to have a dip in
the nature.

The special sporadic types of settlements, the
traditional (dwelling) houses, the bell-towers,
churches from the Arpad-Age, the Series of Folk
Historic Buildings of Pityerszer, the special sporadic
settlements offer several cultural values.
