When to Visit Budapest
WEATHER - HOLIDAYS - SEASONAL EVENTS
|
The ideal times to visit Hungary are in the spring (May through June) and end of summer
and early fall (late August through September).
July and August, peak vacation seasons for Hungarians as well as foreign tourists, can
be hot and humid; Budapest is stuffy and crowded, and the entire Lake Balaton region is
overrun with vacationers.
Many of Hungary's major fairs and festivals take place during the spring and fall, including
the late-March to early-April Spring Festival (in many cities and towns) and the myriad
wine-harvest festivals in late summer and early fall.

Seasonal Events in Budapest
March - April
You don't want to miss the Budapest Spring Festival in March and April.
June
Be entertained by talent and hawkers at the Danube Water Carnival, held the second
week in June on Chain Bridge (Lánchíd), and the Budapest Farewell, also in June.
July
Work up a sweat - vicariously - at the Pentathlon World Championships, held the third
week in July.
August
Witness grace and beauty at the Budapest Summer Opera and Ballet Festive. It runs for
12 days in early- to mid August. If you're too macho to listen to opera, the Formula One
Grand Prix is also in August. You might want to see the flamboyant Budapest Parade, or,
if you are a gentler spirit, you can go to the Festival of Folk Arts, held in the Buda Castle
instead. Young and young-at-heart alike enjoy the Sziget Festival, the large music festival
held on the Shipyard Island (Hajógyári Sziget). The Jewish Summer Festival is also held
in August throughout the city.
Celebrate Hungary's most important national holiday, St. Istvan's (St. Stephen's) Day, on
August 20th. St. Istvan was crowned Hungary's first king in 1001; today he is
commemorated with concerts, ceremonies and fireworks.
September
Sample the great wines Hungary produces at the Budapest Wine Festival in September.
Then eat, drink and be merry during the wide range of cultural events during the Budapest
Autumn Festival, mid-October until early November.
December
From the very last days of November until Christmas the main attraction in Budapest is
the traditional Christmas Market on Vörösmarty Square in the heart of Pest. This well
established event – one of the largest of its type in Europe – has become an
indispensable part of the build-up to the festive season.
Dance and celebrate the New Year in style. On December 30th you can attend a festival
and concert by the 100-member Gypsy Band, and on the 31st you can attend a masked
ball at the Opera House.
Explored enough of the city? Relax and rest your weary feet in one of Budapest's 90-plus
hot springs.
