Budapest's pharmacies (gyógyszertár
in Hungarian) are well stocked and can
provide medicaments for most common
ailments.

Each of the 23 districts of Budapest has
an all-night pharmacy open every day. A
sign on the door of any pharmacy will
help you locate the closest one.

EXPAT HEALTH FAQ

1. Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare
for my move to your city?
No vaccinations are required.

2. Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an
expat? For example, would I be eligible for care under a national health insurance
scheme? Will I be refused treatment at a hospital if I do not have my own insurance?
First aid and ambulance services are free for citizens of the UK, Scandinavia and most
Western European countries. However, follow-up treatment must be paid for.

Treatment at a public outpatient clinic (rendelő intezet) costs little, but doctors working
privately sometimes charge much more. To get a rough idea, a consultation in a doctor’s
surgery (orvosi rendelő) starts at 2,500 forints, while a home visit starts at 4,000 forints.

3. What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?
Orvos (pronounced 'ohr-voh-sh').

4. Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why
and where do they go?
No.

5. What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time
when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?
In an emergency call 104 or 112 for help. There are physicians in attendance around the
clock in every part of the city.

8. How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?
Usually, there is a sign with a snake around a red cross. You can either call it Patika or by
the hard to pronounce name of Gyogyszertar.

Hours are usually between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Each pharmacy hangs a sign with the
address of the closest after-hours pharmacy (ugyeletes gyogyszertar) where you can get
medication in emergency situations.

9. Is the water safe to drink?
Water from the tap is safe to drink.
