BUDA CASTLE LABYRINTH (Budavári Labirintus)

The only labyrinth of the World in operation. During
the Middle Ages the Turks remodelled the original
drip-stone caves into a complex of cellars and
tunnels, so do not expect a natural caving
experience. During WW2 the labyrinth served as a
shelter. Today, the Buda Castle Labyrinth can be
visited with or without guides (but take a map!)

There is a small historical vax museum and also
some prehistoric cave paintings. The labyrints are
very dark and hard to discover - this is the main
reason why children like it here.

the Castle Hill has been recently opened to the
public. Already recorded in medieval documents,

made deep cellars. During the 40-minute guided
tour you can see wells, former storerooms, and the
remains of baths and combat stations used by the
Germans in World War II.

PÁLVÖLGYI CAVE (Pálvölgyi cseppkőbarlang)

Legend says that the cave was discovered by a
grazing sheep that got lost! The cave is unique
because of the large height differences to be
bridged by ladders. Some formations are
particularly popular with children, such as the
animals and the chamber of Snow White and the
seven dwarfs!

The stalactite-rich cave, the longest in the Buda
Hills and the third longest in Hungary, has been an
area under increased natural protection since
1944. The length discovered so far exceeds 7,200
meters, the vertical dimension is 104 m.

The cave's temperature is 11°C al year, so bring a
jacket in the summer!

Guided tours for groups only on a stretch
developed for tourists (500 m). Hiking boots are
advisable, and expect to climb a steep iron ladder.
Tours set off every hour. Children under 5 are not
allowed in.

SZEMLŐHEGYI CAVE (Szemlőhegyi-barlang)

The cave system consists of a rich variety of
unmatched mineral formations, built by thermal
waters. This drip-stone cave is particularly
recommended for smaller children (toddlers and
strollers can easily be taken), but is in fact very
interesting for all ages. The cave has beautiful
aragonite and gypsum crystal formations. 2,200
meters have been explored, the vertical dimension
is 50 m. The cave is under increased natural
protection.

The 1 hour tour starts every hour, on the hour; the
last tour at 3 pm. Bring a jacket in the summer!

Hungary probably has the best caves in Europe and the Buda hills happen to hold a few of
them in its limestone.
Budapest is one of the world's very few cities where more than 100
caves can be found within the municipal area. The Budapest caves are in the Buda
Mountains situated on the right bank of the Danube, and they are located under residential
districts.

The caves of Budapest are hydrothermal caves. In contrast with the simple plan of a
stream cave these caves are labyrinthine networks of passages. Most of them have
beautiful formations.

The longest cave of Budapest is the Pálvölgyi Cave. The other major cave systems, the
Mátyás-hegyi Cave, Ferenc-hegyi Cave, József-hegyi Cave and Szemlő-hegyi Cave are
also considerable in length and beauty.
